I have read or heard several interesting comments about knit graffiti and tree sweaters . What's the point? Shouldn't wool be put to a better use? What a waste of time? Will it hurt the tree?
What is the point:The point is to create something out of a material that puts it into a new context, because it's fun, because it brightens up a dismal grey day, because it makes people smile.
Shouldn't wool be put to a better use: It could be argued that every material an artist uses could be put to a better use or donated. Like paint, or beads, the vibrant colours of yarn become yet another medium for an artist to use.
It's a waste of time: That is a matter of personal opinion.
Will it hurt the tree: Not according to the several professionals we talked to.
The biggest kick is talking to people, old and young, who stop and ask us questions or let us know how much they are enjoying it. Some have been inspired to knit , or donate a piece for the tree, some just want to touch the tree. HeEre is a link to our KnitKnot Tree Slide Show.

I just love the 'knitknot' tree and I bet it looks so cheerful, colorful and warm! Good grief, I can't believe that anyone would think that it could hurt the tree since the tree will keep growing no matter what. If anything gets hurt it'll be the knitted yarn stretching as the tree grows.
well nancy has been the mad stitcher apogee and doing most of the stitching together, lol! we have been adding to it since the beginning of Feb and strangers have added too or donated unfinished knitting to us.
lynette, sometimes people just want to touch it. More often though it seems to have become a photo opportunity. What has really been wonderful is that it has become a community project more than OUR project.

My sister-in-law wanted to stage an intervention about my "knitting problem" when she heard I was knitting while listening to a speaker at a conference. I wonder what she would say if I started knitting for trees... ;)
